Question 1 · Comprehension: Cyber Security/Online Safety

Which of the following practices best protects a student's online bank account?

Show answer and explanation

Answer: D. Using a strong, unique password and never sharing a one-time password (OTP) with anyone

Strong unique passwords and keeping OTPs secret defeat most attacks. Re-using passwords lets one leak open every account; genuine banks never ask for your BVN or OTP by phone; links in alarming texts are a common phishing trick.

Question 2 · Antonyms and Synonyms

Choose the option opposite in meaning to the word in capital letters. When the police in Ibadan questioned the suspect, his answers were EVASIVE.

Show answer and explanation

Answer: D. direct

EVASIVE answers avoid the question; the opposite is "direct" (straightforward). "Elusive" is close in meaning; "nervous" and "rude" describe manner, not whether the question was answered.

Question 3 · Forms and Functions of Tense

Choose the option that best completes the sentence: If I ____ the governor of Lagos State, I would clear the drainage channels first.

Show answer and explanation

Answer: B. were

An unreal (imaginary) present condition takes the past subjunctive "were" with "would" in the main clause. "Shall be" and "will be" are future forms that do not follow "if" in an unreal condition; "have been" does not match "would clear".

Question 4 · Dynamic Verbs, Stative Verbs and Present Progressive Tense

Which of the following sentences is correct?

Show answer and explanation

Answer: C. I know the answer to the question.

"Know", "own" and "believe" are stative verbs (they describe states, not actions) and are not normally used in the progressive. Only "I know the answer" uses the simple form correctly; the others are common Nigerian-English errors.

Question 5 · Dynamic Verbs, Stative Verbs and Present Progressive Tense

In which sentence does the present progressive tense show a temporary situation?

Show answer and explanation

Answer: A. Ada is staying with her aunt in Kaduna this month.

"Is staying ... this month" uses the present progressive for a temporary arrangement. "Stays every holiday" is simple present (habit); "has stayed" is present perfect; "stayed" is simple past — none of them is the present progressive.

Question 6 · Subject-Verb Agreement (Concord)

Choose the option that best completes the sentence: Bread and beans ____ my favourite breakfast on Saturdays.

Show answer and explanation

Answer: D. is

When two nouns joined by "and" name a single idea or dish (bread and beans as one meal), notional concord takes a singular verb, and "my favourite breakfast" (singular) confirms it. "Are"/"have been" treat them as two separate things; "were" also breaks the habitual present ("on Saturdays").

Question 7 · Dynamic Verbs, Stative Verbs and Present Progressive Tense

Choose the option that best completes the sentence: This egusi soup ____ delicious.

Show answer and explanation

Answer: D. tastes

Here "taste" is a stative linking verb (it describes a quality), so it takes the simple present: "tastes". "Is tasting" would mean someone is actively tasting; "are tasting" and "do taste" also fail concord with the singular "soup".

Question 8 · Comprehension: Reading to Identify the Writer's Mood, Tone and Purpose

Read the passage carefully and answer the question that follows. When Funmilayo Adeyemi moved to Yaba to begin her first year at a college of education, she was surprised by the heaps of plastic bottles that blocked the drains near her hostel. Every rainy season, the street flooded, and traders lost goods worth thousands of naira. Most residents blamed the government, but Funmilayo believed that ordinary people could do something about it. She persuaded six of her classmates to join her, and together they placed large sacks beside the hostel gate with a hand-painted sign: 'Drop your bottles here.' At first, few people paid attention. Some students even laughed at the group, calling them 'the bottle collectors'. Undeterred, Funmilayo visited a recycling company in Ikeja and learnt that it paid for clean plastic by the kilogram. This discovery changed everything. Once the hostel residents realised that their empty bottles could be turned into money, the sacks filled up within days. By the end of the session, the club had sold more than two tonnes of plastic and used part of the income to buy textbooks for a nearby primary school. The drains on the street were clearer than they had been for years, and the flooding, though not completely gone, was far less severe. Funmilayo now speaks at secondary schools across Lagos. 'People do not change because you shout at them,' she tells students. 'They change when they see that the new way benefits them.' Question: As used in the passage, the word 'Undeterred' means

Show answer and explanation

Answer: D. not discouraged

Despite being laughed at, Funmilayo carried on and visited a recycling company, so 'undeterred' means not discouraged or put off. Nothing in the passage suggests she was angry, ashamed or amused.

Question 9 · Forms and Functions of Tense

Choose the option that best completes the sentence: Listen! The church choir ____ the national anthem.

Show answer and explanation

Answer: D. is singing

"Listen!" shows the action is happening at the moment of speaking, so the present progressive "is singing". "Sings" is habitual; "sang" is past; "has sung" shows completion.

Question 10 · Formal Letter Writing

A formal letter that begins "Dear Sir" should end with

Show answer and explanation

Answer: C. Yours faithfully,

"Dear Sir/Madam" (no name) pairs with "Yours faithfully". "Yours sincerely" goes with a named salutation such as "Dear Mr Okafor"; the others are informal closes.

Question 11 · Registers (Houses and Homes, Family Relations, Medicine, Banking, Law)

Choose the option that best completes the sentence. Ngozi went to the bank to ___ money into her savings account.

Show answer and explanation

Answer: B. deposit

Putting money into an account is to 'deposit' it. To 'withdraw' is to take money out, to 'overdraw' is to take out more than the account holds, and a customer does not 'lend' money into an account.

Question 12 · Adjuncts (Adverbs)

In "The traders gathered at the motor park early in the morning", the expression "early in the morning" is an adjunct of

Show answer and explanation

Answer: C. time

It answers WHEN the traders gathered, so it is an adjunct of time. "At the motor park" is the adjunct of place; nothing tells HOW (manner) or WHY (reason).
